Portable Generator Buying Guide

Begin with the equipment you need to power and the connections it requires. A generator’s advertised peak output alone does not establish whether it can run your loads or connect to your intended setup.

List running and starting requirements

Record the voltage and running demand of each load from its label or manufacturer documentation. Identify equipment with additional starting requirements. Decide which loads must operate together and compare those requirements with the generator’s continuous and starting ratings. Do not treat a short peak rating as continuous output or assume every outlet can supply the machine’s full advertised power.

Check voltage and connections

Confirm outlet type, voltage and current ratings, plus the compatible cord or connection equipment. A generator, transfer switch, inlet and power cord are different items; a listing for one does not include the others unless stated. Have a qualified electrician determine the appropriate arrangement for a building connection. Never plug a generator into a household wall outlet.

Compare the exact fuel and model

Check the specific model’s supported fuels and output ratings for the fuel you intend to use. Compare dimensions, weight, controls and included accessories. For sensitive equipment, consult both manufacturers’ compatibility requirements instead of assuming a generator is suitable from its size or marketing description. Review the exact operator manual before use.

Distinguish condition and kit contents

Keep new and refurbished listings separate when comparing prices. Read the stated condition, included equipment and applicable warranty details for the actual listing. Confirm whether a battery, charger, wheel kit, cables or fuel connections are included where relevant. Choose the exact option on the product page before comparing the final price.

Plan a safe operating location

Portable fuel-burning generators must operate outdoors. CPSC advises placing them at least 20 feet from homes with exhaust directed away from occupied buildings. Never operate one in a garage or shed. Follow the manual and CPSC guidance for carbon monoxide alarms, weather protection, refueling and electrical connections. If your site cannot accommodate safe operation, resolve that before purchasing.
